Psalm 40:1-17

Chapter 40
For the director. A psalm. Of David. 1 I waited, I waited for the LORD, and he inclined to me and heard my cry. 2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, from the mud of the mire, and he set my feet upon a rock; he established them. 3 And he brought me up from the pit of roaring tumult, from the mud of the mire, and he set me up upon a Rock; he established my feet. Blessed! And he put in my mouth a new song, praise to our God; many will see and fear and trust in the LORD. 4 Blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust and has not turned to the arrogant and those who turn aside to lies. 5 Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, and your thoughts toward us. There is no one like you. I will tell and I will speak; they are too numerous to count. 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire; you have dug ears for me. Burnt offering and sin offering you did not ask. 7 Then I said, "Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written about me." 8 To do your will, my God, is my desire, and your Torah is in the midst of my inward parts. 9 I have announced righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I have not restrained my lips; O LORD, you know. 10 I have not covered your righteousness; I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation in the midst of my heart—I have not hidden them. Your lovingkindness and your truth to a great assembly. 11 You, LORD, do not withhold your mercies from me; your steadfast love and your truth always protect me. 12 For evils have surrounded me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I am not able to see. They are more numerous than the hairs of my head, and my heart has forsaken me. 13 For evils have surrounded me, calamity upon calamity; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I could not see their ends. The hairs of my head have terrified me, and my heart has forsaken me. 14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together, those who seek my life to sweep it away; let them turn back and be humiliated, those who desire my evil. 15 Let them be ashamed and confounded together, the seekers of my vital life force to destroy it; let them turn back and be humiliated, the desirers of my evil. 16 Let them be ashamed and confounded, all who seek you; let those who say to me, "Aha! the brother! Aha! the brother!" continually say, "Let the LORD be magnified"; lovers of your salvation. 17 But I am poor and needy; Lord, consider me, for you are my helper and my deliverer, God; do not delay.
